Kelly Strayhorn Theater says “give me liberty” with MLK Day event
News | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: Neighborhoods throughout Pittsburgh have gone a bit quiet as the post-holiday rest and recent COVID-19 variant paused some big events. That will change on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when the Kelly Strayhorn Theater honors the legacy of the late civil rights leader with a day of empowering art, music, dance, and more.

Kelly Strayhorn Theatre is a theatre that was built through community funding and arts advocacy. I’ve been to several Kelly Strayhorn productions and I’m always impressed by the community aspect of everything they create. It’s a testament to its integrity as an institution that it can continue doing important programming in the midst of a pandemic. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day event is just one of many examples of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater making change through art and community. Additionally, this event isn’t only being put on by the Kelly Strayhorn Theater. BOOM Concepts, Women of Visions, Anita Levels, Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation, The Alloy School, and Staycee Pearl dance project & Soy Sos are all contributing in some way to the celebration. This event is intended to uplift Black voices and bring advocacy and activism to East Liberty. It shows dedication to collaboration, and is a perfect example of what collaboration in arts can create.
