Hollywood Has Got Method Acting All Wrong, Here’s What the Process is Really About
The Theatre Times: So-called method acting seems to be having a moment. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst apparently didn’t speak to each other on the set of their new film, Power of the Dog, to help them stay in character. While Lady Gaga is said to have spoken entirely with an Italian accent for nine months while working on her new film, House of Gucci – using it even when calling her mother.

I find this article fascinating because it reveals the lack of method to Hollywood method acting. Especially comical was the example of Lady Gaga, who stayed in character with an Italian accent for 9 months for House of Gucci, going so far to speak to her own mother with the accent. The end result is an accent many critics have called more Eastern-European than Italian. The film’s on set dialect coach, hired to help other actors in the cast, admitted to finding Gaga’s accent to be less than acceptable. It goes to show, even with all the practice in the world, if you’re practicing bad stuff without method, it’s not good practice at all. The use of techniques and method seem to be more of a joke in Hollywood, or a good anecdote for the press tour. On the flip side, every actor’s process is unique. Who’s to say that this form of “method” acting isn’t what has led these actors to their tremendous success?
