These Colorado Dancers Transformed Loss Into Opportunity
Dance Magazine
: For many dancers, the spring of 2021 brought the long-awaited return to the in-person performing they had been dreaming of since the coronavirus took hold of the world last year. For others, the pandemic's impact proved too devastating for their companies to recover from.

This article truly exemplifies the power of community. Dance Aspen would never have happened if the dancers of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet were not as close as they were, and never could have been successful if not for the support of their town. Even the running of the company itself, in the form of law and finance, required the help of generous individuals on the outside who wanted to be a part of something great. It’s a rare story to hear, that not only did a company of dancers find opportunity in the pandemic, but also that they were able to create a better dance company, one in which they all have more stake and more say over the pieces they do. It’s very fitting for such a community driven project that their next steps hinge around collaboration and growth. I wish this company the very best with their future endeavors.
Rising from the ashes of a dance company that collapsed due to COVID, Dance Aspen is a testament to both resilience from dancers who did not want to leave their community and a keen eye in identifying that the demand for their performance still existed. While last year killed a lot of companies in the performing arts, the past couple months has seen a strong resurgence in the demand for live performance. People are excited to be back watching things live again! This, combined with what I’m sure are amazing fundraising and marketing skills on the part of executive leadership of Dance Aspen, has led to this influx of money and public support for the company. I’m extremely impressed with the members of Dance Aspen for not only taking on the roles of both performance and management in stride, but also doing this while working survival jobs during a raging pandemic. It takes a commitment to each other as a company and true skill to be able to balance all of those things at once. This model also allows the company to be extremely adaptable in an age of frequent change in both consumer demand and safety regulations limiting what they could do in terms of performances. All around just amazing.
