'Cowboy Bebop': Inside the Costume Design of the New Space Western
Variety: The age-old struggle between original source material and creative interpretation rears its head again with Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop”, a new take on the acclaimed Japanese anime originally released in 1998. Costume designer Jane Holland used the original series’ design aesthetic as a springboard for her work in the live-action reboot, which is already the subject of fan scrutiny for not precisely replicating the animated version.

This article is interesting because when it comes to female costumes, there is always going to be a debate, no matter the media. I still remember the debates that happened around the Amazonian costumes in Wonder Woman and Justice League, where the Wonder Woman costumes were more full covering and the Justice League ones were very revealing. If the costume designer had kept to the original design, which was more revealing and probably highly impractical for stunts, there would still be outcry about how come the design wasn’t redone to be more covering. It also makes me wonder if it’s true to the original source material that’s the real issue, or if it’s outcry because the fanservice is gone. It’s also kind of annoying that the article just focused on how Faye’s outfit didn’t entirely match the original material. I would have liked a better breakdown of the new changes that were made and more about their inspiration, like how Spike’s jacket has the “water” character on it.
