Goodman tries new plays with New Stages

Chicago Tribune: Nine months ago, mounting a New Stages festival this season seemed unimaginable for Goodman Theatre, said director of new works Jonathan L. Green. New Stages, which Green called the theater’s primary engine for producing world premieres and a core part of the company’s commitment to new work, returns on Dec. 1 for its 17th annual festival.

Producing new plays is probably terrifying and scary, but if the Goodman is doing it, and making it free to the public, then I feel like they're doing all of the right things to make a more equitable space for BIPOC playwrights and practitioners. It's really cool that the plays are more like immersive experiences and they're curating their plays to tell stories of people from different backgrounds and cultures. Maybe other companies can do what they're doing and take risks to make cool theatre. From the article, it sounds like they've got a lot of easily recognizable names to bring people in so once they're there, they'll see all of the other exciting shows and, hell, they might even enjoy theatre. Festivals are great workshops to try something fun and not fall completely on youre face. Hope it works well and I hope no one gets COVID in the process.
