The new GLP Impression X5 IP Bar looks like an incredible fixture that seems like a really versatile tool. I got to spend time with the FS16 Z fixture this summer, demoing it at my internship, and was really impressed with the color mixing and the pixel mapping abilities of the fixture. It was quite heavy, but a lot of this has to do with the IP65 housing that allows the fixture to be completely weatherproof, which is something they also included in the X5 bar. It seems like it has a really awesome color engine and I would really love to try this fixture out on a show. I really love bar fixtures like this one. In Woyzeck, we have incandescent strip lights that produce a wall of light in the haze and it is such a beautiful effect that I think could be even more powerful with a light like one of these.

New technology, especially within the theatre industry, is always such an exciting prospect. Thinking about the evolution of stage lighting is so inspiring. From fire and sun lit storytelling to candlelight reflected to bulbs to LEDs with, I’m sure, tons of innovation in between. It makes me feel more like a cog in the wheel of human storytelling, a comforting feeling. Like I will carry on the mantel and one day this technology that is so novel and exciting to me will be old news, barely used in the industry like gel scrollers. Especially the innovation when it comes to LED theatrical lighting. It is an entirely new ballpark with thousands more innovations and experiments to be conducted, the same way that the edison bulb was once so exciting and groundbreaking. The “tungsten simulation channel” is of particular interest to me given so many designers keep old incadescants due to their natural ambiance that is hard to replicate with LEDs.

I would love to go to LDI one day and look at these fixtures rather than just read about them. The LED technology that is coming out is pretty cool but I still think that we need to be looking at other fixtures that are not just smart fixtures. I must say I like the sound of the energy-efficient lights! I'm just not in love with the quality of light that they produce, it's not the same as conventional fixtures. I look at some TV shows, movies, and live events and I enjoy the transition and I think it is pretty cool but at the same time it is all getting a little old in my opinion. It's all very flashy and color-saturated which is cool and all but I just feel like it lacks in comparison to more diverse qualities of light. (am I a light snob?... maybe idk just personal preference) I have always liked the idea of using a mixture of LED and conventional fixtures and I will be dumbfounded one day when someone discovers a way to make an energy-efficient light that mimics the true qualities of an incandescent fixture.
