Off-Broadway’s ‘Blue Man Group’ celebrates its 30th anniversary at Astor Place Theatre

DC Metro Theater Arts: There’s good reason why the iconic award-winning Blue Man Group is celebrating the major milestone of its 30th anniversary this month at the intimate downtown space of Off-Broadway’s Astor Place Theatre: audiences and critics alike simply can’t get enough of it!

As someone who has played percussion throughout High School, I have always admired the Blue Man Group. I think that what they do is amazing and always inspiring to find new methods to reuse things that might otherwise get thrown out. I am really glad to see that they were not a victim of the pandemic and they are coming back to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Before reading this article, I actually did not know that they were purchased by the Cirque de Soleil entertainment group. I also think that the group is one of the safer ones to attend at this point because they're mostly percussion and they don't talk so the chance of transmission is incredibly low. I would be hesitant to attend the pre-show reception because then people can unmask and the chance of transmission is much higher. I do understand that they had this because it's their 30th anniversary but I think that at this point, especially when we are seeing an uptick in cases, I would avoid the pre-show reception but I would feel comfortable attending the performance knowing that everyone is vaccinated or recently tested negative.

My mother told me this story that when she was pregnant with me she went to Las Vegas and saw the Blue Man Group. She says that I kicked along with the music the entire time. Although I have never seen a show, outside of the womb of course, they have remained a staple in the theatre world so it is exciting that they won’t end any time soon. To be completely honest, I for some reason thought that the Blue Man Group had always been around. I suppose I never even thought about the fact that it had to have started at some point. It has just always been in my mind. I also greatly enjoy the pictures of the group at their meet and greet photo op afterwards. The blurry photos, the surprised expressions, the off putting blue makeup. All these variables combined to make a genuinely hilarious series of photos.

Happy 30th anniversary Blue Man Group! They really trail-blazed their way into entertainment history. I know a handful of people that went into the arts because of the experience they had watching, or even being a part of, Blue Man Group. I didn’t realize that Cirque owned Blue Man Group until reading this article, and even though they are an amazing company that I am sure treats the Group (new and old members alike) well it makes me sad to think that they are run by a corporation of sorts. I always saw Blue Man Group as some kind of theatrical rebel that took chances and didn’t play by your standard theater rules, so it's surprising to me that they would let someone else lead them. However, if any theatrical company was to lead them the rebellious, risk-taking Cirque is certainly the company to do it. I am excited to see where the next thirty years take the group!

This was so nostalgic to me when I was looking at this, because I remember one of the first pieces of theater that I watched was the blue man group all those years ago. I think that this particular piece of media is so cool because they constantly find new ways to keep the entertainment new and exciting while also sticking to the general theme of the blue man group. I like also how they combine music and drama essentially and that it isn’t just a random collection of movements and actions but has a storyline attached to it. And also from what I remember this piece had audience participation which is something that I really liked because it allowed the onions members to be engaged throughout the whole show because you never knew when you were going to be called on, and it really led the entire theater as a whole to become immersed into the world of blue man group which is interesting because the set is an exactly realistic, or a world but rather a series of random instruments that are more or less abstracted. But it’s still allows the audience to become immersed into the world which I really like.
