I actually saw this production-before it toured- in New York in 2018. Overall, it was stunning. In the context of the show and the time it was also stunning. I do have to agree however with some of the reviewers that Eliza, although strong willed, changes to fit society's standards of what she should be, specifically because a rich white man takes her in, tells her she's worthless, and then changes her. And then they fall in love. That is so problematic on so many levels. Firstly the way people talk supposedly determines everything about them, and is basically the entire driving plot for the story. It is a fantastic musical, but I think there was a lot there that needed to be addressed that was not. The musical was essentially just redone and nothing was really changed. That is definitely a way to do a show, but it felt quite lacking.
