RISD launches Race in Art & Design cluster-hire for anti-racism initiative

www.dezeen.com: Rhode Island School of Design is hiring 10 faculty members that specialise in issues of race and decoloniality in the arts, architecture and design as part of its wider plan to tackle systemic racism in the school. RISD's Race in Art & Design cluster-hire initiative includes four roles in the school's Liberal Arts and Experimental and Foundation Studies divisions, three in Architecture and Design and three in Fine Arts.

I was lucky enough to attend RISD's pre-college program last year. I had a really amazing time and my art improved a lot, but it didn't take long for me to realize that there were alarmingly few black and latinx people there. I also did not have any BIPOC professors. It's nice to see that RISD is taking steps towards making their school and curriculum more inclusive, but the emphasizing of hiring knew people specifically for DE&I committees worries me, because, while important, there need to be new hires in every part of the school's faculty, staff, and administration. Art schools I think are especially culprits of white-centering because of the combined histories of racism in art and colleges. What is considered "high art" has always been chosen by and for cis white men, and colleges were built to be attended by them. The most dangerous aspect of this, in my opinion, is the illusion of diversity of art school. I entered RISD pre-college looking to meet people I couldn't in my small town, and left sorely disappointed by the lack of diversity in a so-called inclusive spot.
