This hand tool kit from Festool seems almost like a "professional tools for assembling Ikea furniture" kit. All its missing is some form of mallet...and well, a power drill or impact of some kind. That being said, this is extremely expensive for that. While I understand everything Festool is expensive and I am very aware of how much their power tools cost, this still shocked me. 225 dollars for not very much...a few screwdrivers, nut drivers, Allen keys and box end wrenches. I absolutely do not care how nice the tools are, or how nice the case it, or how nicely they are packaged, there is no reason for these tools to be this expensive. What I found especially interesting is the singular comment on the article which makes a very interesting point in saying that the plastic inserts are actually very cheaply made and don't hold up. So...what are we paying for?...the name.
Like DJ talks about, this particular installation kit feels much more expensive than you would want, especially if the box is made as cheaply as that one user says it is. However, I think the idea of an installation tool kit is pretty neat. As a Job Lead, I packed up a whole cart of tools ahead of time with everything I would need for load in so the team didn't have to burn time going back and forth to the shop. I was lucky to be the only show loading in at the time, so I didn’t have to negotiate for certain tools with anyone else. Since our calendar can sometimes get so busy that there are shows loading in or out in all our spaces all at once, it might not be a bad idea to come up with a standard inventory of installation tools and then make sure we have three sets of those tools, and also carts that are specially reserved for installation, that can be loaded up with tools. Right now, our carts kind of run free and get filled with miscellaneous clutter.
Actually taking various classes and getting to know more various tools that I have not even used in theater tech from my high school, I am just now realizing how important the handiness and quality of the tools are. Although I am not that knowledgeable yet to evaluate the tool kit, I do think it is fairly a good organization. I am not quite sure about the pricing though. I had to buy the tool kit in Korea to prepare for my classes, and the kit that had almost similar components with this one did not even cost more than a hundred dollar. I know professionals would be sensitive when using the tool because even I can tell the difference between cheap and fairly expensive tools, and I don’t know if the tools in the kit could satisfy such need. Also, the comments at the bottom is saying that the sustainers are at the very poor quality, so this one might not be the best tool kit to buy.
So it looks like Festool is trying to sell a $225 set of hand tools in a plastic Tupperware. I have previously expressed my disapproval of these high-end tool companies that make very basic hand tools and sell them for a ridiculous price because of the brand stamped on the handle. Personally, I think this Festool product is blatantly disrespectful to the tool industry that Craftsman created in the ’90s. Hand tools are generally used by mechanics and what Craftsman was trying to create in the ’90s was a world where anyone that had the desire to learn how to do their own work, could get the tools they needed from a reputable manufacturer for a decent price. There is no denying the fact that Festool is an incredibly high end tool manufacturer, I just do not think that it is in anyone’s best interest to spend too much money on tools that are meant for the average user.
