Mumbai’s The Company Theatre Finds Innovative Ways to Navigate Theatre Digitally

The Theatre Times: A woman haunted by insomnia, a djinn, and a hallucinatory mind during the COVID-19 lockdown; a failed social media influencer’s journey down the rabbit hole of infinite scrolling; a 2020 version of The Mahabharata’s “warrior princess-turned-mute doll,” Chitrangada. Ranging from Marathi to Hindi and English, these are just some of the many stories being told at The Company Theatre’s TheatreFILMTheatre — A Festival of Shorts.

Another really great article about the innovation that needs to take place in the arts right now. I think online work really fails when it tries to ignore the fact that it is online. This article is so inspiring to see an artistic director who has been in the industry for a long time (30 years) who is positively leaning into creating the best work possible. I feel like long-time industry members are resisting the change coming as theatres realize they need to pivot longer than expected so the fact that an older theatre creator was saying let's get original when we get digital is great to read. The attention to manipulating different forms that Atul talks about such as a 24-hour long play on WhatsApp and using Facebook to tell stories. It is so nice to hear that people want to create work that isn’t a theatre or film but that is artistically innovative. I think the more we silo film, theatre, and multi-media art, the less creative we can get. I mean how many ways are there to stage a play (seemingly many but they aren’t really different). The Company Theatre is really trying to innovate and be creative in a beautiful way that I hope leads to their companies prosperity.
