Virtual Quarantunes Concert Raises Over $1.2 Million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS

Playbill: Quarantunes, the innovative series of fundraising Zoom concerts created and hosted by WME Partner Richard Weitz and his daughter Demi Weitz, broke its own record October 18 when an evening featuring over two dozen Broadway artists raised $1,238,273 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. This is the first time the invitation-only stream passed the $1 million fundraising mark in one night.

Over $2 million within just two performances! I see how the concerts were organized very well, but still what Richard and Demi Weitz have achieved is so incredible. I am glad whenever I see these kinds of articles, as there are still so many people that are working hard to expose theaters to the society as much as possible, sometimes tying the performances to the critical issues (in this case, AIDS, which made me wonder if it was intentional of them to put RENT as one of the lineups). This is the great example of showing people how much impact that performances can make to the society, even with the current situation with COVID and social distancing. I hope this events to continue even after the COVID is over, as it would still be very attractive to a great number of audience members that cannot attend to the performances in person.

The line up! The numbers! The outcome! Absolutely phenomenal job done by Broadway Cares. To think with just over 700 guests, over $630k could be donated in the span of six hours, and to be matched by another $600k... I am always so happy to find these articles - they are little bits of joy, all about big name people coming together for a cause and then actually making a difference! For me, I have yet to experience a "zoom concert" because I just haven't been able to picture myself sitting in front of my laptop, enjoying a live concert. However, seeing how many people are doing it makes me think - isn't it just like any live TV performance I watch, like at an awards ceremony or the DNC? People seem to really be getting into it, and honestly, 3 full broadway musicals and a line up like that? All in the comfort of my pajamas? This article has me thinking I should really jump on these zoom concerts from now. A good cause and healthy doses of performance!
