This was a really cool article to read about a company a) a mission-focused around diverse voices and b) a company that looked at the #weseeyouWAT movement and reacted quite quickly. Broadway has reacted and it has been many months. It is also amazing to see this company was able to keep its 15 staff members employed and that has been a driving force. Also, it is great to see that they are going ahead with a virtual season instead of waiting around trying to gamble to see if they will be able to be in person or not. Choosing one modality and then moving forward with it will lead to much better work than trying to work in multiple modalities or planning to work in multiple modalities and seeing what the future holds as right now is the time to accept that COVID will be around for at least another full year and theatre really can’t/shouldn’t be working to bring people back conventional till there is a) a vaccine/ b) for another year. It is nice reading the acknowledgment from the company saying that things will be virtual for longer than originally anticipated. It is also great to see how mission-driven they are as a company focuses on community conversations and being accessible instead of just producing content to produce content and not focusing on a mission when producing content. Streaming your old shows for donations doesn’t really follow a mission especially for this company that focuses on new works. Theatre’s that don’t start creating mission-driven work will fail. Stagnant companies that don’t adapt and just count on theatre returning to normal in the next 12 months will close as normal and even the post-COVID normal won’t exist for a long time, people need to stop kidding themselves.
