Zimbabwe’s Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre

The Theatre Times: The construction of performance spaces for creatives in Zimbabwe has been somewhat on the slow end. Since independence very few spaces have been developed to cater to the arts and to make matters worse, there is no policy that seeks to address this.

It's nice to see people stepping up and creating opportunities such as these. Some countries are so limited in the resources that they provide for artists, that the people forget that those forms of art exists, resulting in less of a need or urgency for them. I completely understand that governments may have more important things to deal with for the country before they think of providing art spaces for the country which is why it is important to have someone advocating for the arts and donors willing to set aside time and support it financially. Growing up in the Turks & Caicos Islands, I was not surrounded by art at all. Because of this, I didn't know the many facets to theatre, nor realized its important and the knowledge it gives you. Many people see art as a hobby which is why it falls so low on the priority list at times, especially when dealing with a whole country and its issues. But I feel as though proper exposure and knowledge to the possibilities of art forms can help to get those people to understand how important it is. It just takes a few people willing to jump-start it all.
