Tyler Micoleau on Lighting Be More Chill

Stage Directions: Be More Chill is a musical based on the 2004 novel by Ned Vizzini. After a 2015 regional theatre production, the musical premiered Off-Broadway in 2018 and is now nearing the end of a successful run on Broadway, at the Lyceum Theatre. Lighting has been in the capable hands of Tyler Micoleau since the original production. At the Lyceum he has used GLP fixtures extensively, with the impression S350 and impression E350 making their Broadway debut, in combination with the JDC1, impression X4 Bar 20, and the staple impression X4.

The title of this article initially drew my attention because I am a lighting designer. Reading this article made me feel like my friends when I start talking about lighting. This article is full of terminology and names of specific lights. Personally, I love learning and learning about things I care about, lighting being one of them. Reading about all the different types of lights and uses and sizes fascinated me. I am amazed by how small the JDC1s are; six inches deep. The article brings up a unique point that I didn’t even consider as a factor: limited space due to older construction. It is not only important to take this into account for lighting, but for all aspects of theatre. I am amazed to go into this industry and see where it goes from here. There is so much new technology that is being created all the time, so who knows what the future of lighting holds. This article not only talks about the different equipment that is new and interesting, but they explained how it was used in their production of Be More Chill. There are also photos from the show provided to show the tools in use. I wish the article showed more images of the equipment itself to get a deeper understanding of what they were working with without having to do outside research.
