A Fierce and Fractured Fairy Tale: A Review of Into the Woods at Writers Theatre
Newcity Stage: Far upstage center sits a hodgepodge of a tree. Built from disembodied chair legs and mismatched wood, this tree looms over the audience with an eerie grimace. It is gorgeous yet terrifying at the same time, much like the fairy tales Stephen Sondheim rearranged thirty-three years ago to make his masterpiece, “Into the Woods.” At a time when our world is far from a fairy tale, the show is a much needed reminder that what we do matters.

Before I even started reading this article the initial photo of the Witch in this production of Into the Woods looks FANTASTIC. I am already excited. I find it interesting that this article says that Into the Woods is for the “modern age that has aged well.” I do consider it a very disney-esque type of musical, although the contents can be very dark at times. I also think that this review of this particular production does not exemplify why this production of Into the Woods is any better than previous versions, nor does it make me want to buy tickets. I’m actually somewhat disappointed in the writing of this article because I feel like a review is supposed to be an opinion pieces on the production and I read the entire article and if you asked me what the writer thought I would tell you that I do not know.
