The Responsibility of the Artist-Critic

HowlRound Theatre Commons: There’s an unwritten yet widely understood policy within arts criticism circles that discourages theatre critics from participating in theatre creation. It is believed that if critics are also artists, they can’t be objective.

I believe that having a deep background and understanding of something will make you a better critic versus creating bias. You will understand the processes of the craft and what it takes to create something so intricate. There are many nuances to theater that nontheater can not understand and so critics who have a background in theater overall have a better understanding of what is good or not. I think it still is important for them to put a disclaimer if they were somehow involved or associated with a show that they were working on because that can have an impact on the overall review. Theater reviews play an essential part in having audience members buy their tickets in the first place and so having reviews be honest and correct is essential.
