Pittsburgh Piano Day literally drives music to the city

TribLIVE.com: Peter Stumpf is Pittsburgh’s “piano man.”

He and a group of other musicians will take to the road Saturday and Sunday to bring music to the streets for “Piano Day Pittsburgh.” Stumpf, a piano technician, launched the annual event in 2016.

They will strap an 800-pound, seven-foot concert semi-grand Steinway & Sons “836” piano, valued at over $100,000, to an open-bed trailer. Then they’ll zip around the city.

I think this is a lovely way to get music and art into the community and encourage people to come together and have new experiences. I also think the idea of moving around such a heavy and expensive piano so much is terrifying as a musician. Yikes! What happens if it rains? Bringing art and music into such public spaces is important though. I find it interesting to have the piano referred to as an indigenous instrument to the Pittsburgh area. It’s hard to think of when you pass by certain neighborhoods, but I think it’s a good reminder of how Pittsburgh used to be, and how art and music could be such a unifier amongst people regardless of class and occupation. Anything that gets people exposure to things that can help them learn and grow is a win in my book, and I’d like to maybe visit one of the piano locations!
