Hollywood Provides Few Jobs for Latino Actors, Filmmakers (Study)

Variety: Hollywood has failed miserably to provide Latinx actors with starring roles in major movies, according to a new study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.

To draw its conclusions, the report examined the 100 top grossing movies from 2007 to 2018 and found that only 3% of the films had Latinx actors in lead or co-lead roles. A mere 4.5% of all speaking characters were Latinx. More troubling, there was no meaningful change in representation over the 12-year time period that the study examined.

While the numbers that this article talks about are SHOCKING… the information is not extremely shocking to me. I feel like this is not a surprise because of the amount of white washing that exists in the entertainment industry. However, what’s truly disappointing about it is that in the past twelve years there has been no real significant change in Latinx representation in movies. This makes me so angry! Considering that a huge part of America consists of Latinx people, and that they do not see themselves represented in any real way in movies is awful. I also did not know that the Latinx community was such a large percentage of American movie-goers. 20% of movie-going audiences are Hispanic… so why is the entertainment industry not altering their content to one of their largest audiences? One of the first things we learn in business class is to tailor an argument or discussion or product to the audience. How can the entertainment industry defy that standard and still be well off?
