www.broadwayworld.com: Who is Annie without her red dress? Or Eva with out her balcony? It is the charge of the Broadway designer to transport the audience into the world of a show, whether it be Great Depression-era New York City or outside of the Casa Rosada.

This article just comes to show how important the design team is to a show. In respect to the part about scenic design, Derek McLane’s process reinforces an idea I took away from a reading assigned in our foundations of drama class. McLane began with the details in the script, the specifics, to create the world. The reading reinforces this process of looking into specifics to create the general atmosphere and mood. The atmosphere and mood are consequences of the specifics.
It’s also astonishing how the designers broke the rules of theatre design for creativity and to cater to the needs of the show. As explained in the article, the staging of the show breaks tradition, affecting the sound design at the same time. As long as it works and is safe, why not? The film of Moulin Rouge is an iconic piece of cinema and this musical theatre version of Moulin Rouge certainly didn’t disappoint, especially in regards to its designs.
