Pittsburgh CLO’s Once is a sweet, if flimsy, love letter to music

Theater | Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh City Paper: In 2011, the musical successfully completed the delicate balancing act of telling a small, human story while managing to be a Broadway crowd-pleaser. It’s not an uncommon challenge in theater. Unquestionably one of the most intimate art forms, theater frequently occupies opulent spaces — like the 3,000-seat Benedum — which were built for spectacle, not intimacy. Is it Once’s fault if the story it chooses to tell is a little too small to fill that space?

The CLO just opened their final regional production, Once. The CLO has been well known for producing high-quality theatre, serving the greater Pittsburgh Area. Most of the designers and actors are union, and from outside of Pittsburgh. This summer, I have seen three of their shows, all very well done. Once, is a little different than the other shows. It was not originally intended for very large audiences, such as the Benedum. The article goes into detail about how Once is an intimate show and should be treated that way, so the large theatre does not do it justice. While I see this point, I also feel like they are very capable of scaling it up, while not losing much of the intimacy factor. Although I will not have time to see Once, I am sure it will be great.
