Scarlett Johansson continues problematic streak, will play a trans man
The Verge: A year after Scarlett Johansson’s appearance in 2017’s adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, in which she played a canonically Asian woman and sparked a conversation about whitewashing in Hollywood, the actor has made yet another questionable decision: next year, she’ll be starring in Ghost director Rupert Sanders’ Rub & Tug, a biopic based on the real-life story of massage parlor boss Dante “Tex” Gill.

As a fan of Scarlett Johansson, I am extremely disappointed. After Ghost in the Shell I was hopeful that she would learn from her mistakes but it appears that she has not. It deeply saddens me to see how Hollywood so blatantly disregards minority groups in favor of casting well known and accessible actors and actresses. There is a wide variety of available performers who I am certain would be able to play the role of Dante Gill with equal vibrancy and quality. I remember a few years ago when there was a push to make Hollywood more diverse, and some fantastic movies came from that time. However, it seems like they are taking steps backwards so that they can keep their favorite performers happy. Personally, I can not and will not continue to support people who make such ill-informed decisions. It is 2018 and the directors, performers, and other important people of Hollywood should understand by now why this is unacceptable. The only way to get this message across is for there to be financial repercussions for these poor decisions. Unfortunately, most people are more concerned with their own entertainment than issues like these.
