I think the fact that Disney is beginning to experiment with VR is a huge advance for the world in terms of using new types of media. If this Disney VR short ends up being a success, then I think it is clear to see that Disney will be pursuing this further into the future. I also think that the fact that the film is simply about the cycle of a family and their house proves that this is a test for Disney. It seems like a pretty simple concept, so the main promoting element to it must be the fact that it is VR. For me, what seems most unfortunate about this development is that it limits the audience. Unless Disney comes out with a VR headset that can play their movies, right now there are very few people who are able to experience the short film. This seems neither good for Disney or for their audience. And even if they were able to make a headset, it would most likely take away the joy of sitting in a movie theater with other people and getting to all react to the movie together in one space. On the other hand, I think that when animation is VR, it makes it 100 times more powerful because it is no longer just animation, instead it is easier to believe it is the real world. So I guess in the end, if Disney is able to figure out how to do this properly, it could be a very good thing for technology, creators, and the general public. On the other hand, this process will have to be executed very carefully in order to keep the viewership up.
