Backstage: SAG-AFTRA, the nation’s union for screen actors, is gearing up for “the fight of its life” on behalf of animation voiceover actors, said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris. The powerful union is initiating the first steps of a strike—pinpointing streaming services like Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, and Amazon, as well as newcomer services from Disney, Facebook, and Warner Bros.

I clicked on this article because I had never perceived voice over actors any differently from actors who show their face on the screen. One way or another these people are actors but I assume in this industry from what I have read in this article that a face to the voice really can gain you a lot more money and even respect. Animation artists are now faced with the choice of speaking up and stepping out or staying quiet and excepting a producer's low offer to keep their careers alive. I am surprised that this part of the acting world has been treated so differently from the rest. Animation actors supposedly had been protected by unions in the past but when it comes to creating longer standing laws in their favor the world goes mute. I hope there is justice in the future for these artists because they deserve the same respect and pay that any other actor would receive.
It was really interesting to read this article because we just learned about unions in production management class and because streaming services are very present in my life. This Article is about animation voice over actors possibly going on strike to fight for a standard minimum payment and payment for their work when it is streamed over and over. I have actually wondered how artists are compensated on streaming services for a long time. This might not have been a big deal four years ago the last time SAG-AFTRA negotiated contracts, but streaming services are so common now that it can’t be avoided. I did not realize that going on strike was a decision that the union voted on and that members and non-members could face consequences for going into work. This article wonder if an artist gets paid every time their song is played on Spotify or other music streaming services.
