Wild Balloon Creatures Overtake the Streets of New York in Jason Hackenwerth’s Animal Soul
Colossal: In Animal Soul, a fleeting exhibition at Brookfield Place in New York City, artist Jason Hackenwerth (previously) brought to life a menagerie of inflatable creatures. Born from his wild imagination, the interactive inflatable artworks included wearable “Megamite” costumes sported by professional dancers, and towering fabric creatures that soared above the crowds. You can see more from Hackenwerth on Instagram.

Wow, this takes balloon animals to a whole new level. I never would have thought that you could make big costumes and structures out of balloons, but it creates a fascinating texture. The balloons look very smooth and soft and playful, but on some of the costumes the balloons are not fully inflated and create little tails that remind me of sea anemones. I would love to wear one of these costumes, but I would like even more to see how they are made. Another ballon that the artist created was much much more prominent and made from fabric monster/sea anemone that looks like the coolest blow up bouncy house ever. It's fascinating to see the seams from where the artist sewed the fabric together, and I wonder how he patterned all of the curvy tentacles. It reminds me of a giant venus fly trap that has four legs and can walk around and haunt my dreams.
