Putting the High School Voice in the High School Story
Breaking Character: Who could forget the iconic lines of the movie Heathers? In 1988, the movie premiered to surprisingly giant audiences nationwide and garnered a cult following for its harsh attack on the reality of high school life. Along with many others, I grew up with this dark comedy as a kid, but it’s shocking to see that this eighties cult classic has gained even more relevance in 2018.

Overall, I thought this piece was particularly poignant and offered a view on a point that I have often expressed myself. I believe that in contemporary society voicing one's issues is viewed as weakness and because of this children are ostracized from their individual societies. But, in finding a unique platform to voice one's issues and express what someone is feeling without directly stating it, theatre gives high schoolers a venue to truly express themselves in a new and unique way. Its also powerful to put one's self in the shoes of someone who is able to experience difficult things like extreme versions of the challenges that a high schooler may face. And by putting on shows such as American Idiot, Spring Awakening, and even Newsies it gives teenagers an opportunity to express their feelings in a different way. Newsies shows that you can fight back against an oppressive force, and American Idiot and Spring Awakening deal with other issues on their own but all of these address issues in their own right which allows high schoolers to learn more about themselves.
