Field Guide To Estonian Theatre Audiences

The Theatre Times: Estonians are among the least religious people in Europe, however, one can assert without a shadow of a doubt that we are of theatre faith. The average Estonian attends the theatre more often than the church. In 2016, the total audience numbers at professional theatres topped 1.2 million. Considering the relatively small size of our population, with a bit of rough-handed rounding it nearly adds up to one attendance per every inhabitant. Not bad, is it? In reality, not everyone goes to the theatre. The share of the population that has attended a theatre performance in the last year is a “mere” 45 percent. Who are these people and what brings them to the theatre?

This article was better than I could have ever imagined. Right off the bat reading that theatre is seen so much in Estonian that people attend church more than theatre is just great. I know that this statistic isn’t necessarily representative but it’s better than the theatre going statistics of America. One interesting thing that I found is how there is still an idea of Summerstock in Estonian theatre even though the convention of theatre is different. What I mean by convention is that I’m pretty sure Estonian theatre normally runs in repertory, unlike American theatre. It is interesting that there is this huge difference yet still Estonian theatre has summer stock. It is great to hear that Estonian theatre tries to make itself accessible to the residences of towns that can’t see theatre city. Probably the best part of the article is reading how the theatre is geared to kids a lot of them. It is great to read that Estonian culture values arts in the education of children.
