Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A settlement was announced late Thursday to resolve criminal charges against the August Wilson Center for African American Culture and pay local stagehands who worked there the money they are owed.
Court-appointed conservator Judith Fitzgerald said she and Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. had reached the settlement. Her announcement came after several days of talks.

This is a great example of the power of the Union. It is pretty well known (I think) that the August Wilson center has been struggling for a while now and I am not surprised that they were facing criminal charges. That would be what happens when you don’t pay union workers. Without a powerful union behind a cause like this one is much more difficult to win. I was a part of a group of non union people who are still owed money from the Joffery Ballet. I did not have much hope for the legal case because of the lack of power that I possess as a worker. Because of the nature of our work it is really crappy when theater people are not paid because it is not as though income is from a steady job. On a bit of a separate note it is crazy how long these cases take, according to the article it has been over a year since the checks were owed.
