I think this award is a really great idea. Nearly everyone I know that is studying theatre, has had some sort of mentor or guide to lead them to where they are today. And now that USITT is in a position where they can offer an award is an awesome thing to hear. One of the things that I found interesting about the qualifications of the award is that they should have be in "work primarily outside academia". I don't know if I completely agree with this standard because academia typically draws people who care about mentoring and guiding people to where they want to go and care about the student as a whole.

This is such a great award. Pretty much everyone has someone who was a mentor for them and I think sometimes we forget to honor and thank them for all their help. Learning about this award really inspires me to make sure I tell everyone who has mentored me how much I appreciate them. Also, I think a lot of mentors act behind the scenes and don't generally take the spot light because they want the person they are mentoring to grow and shine, so this award will bring them into the spotlight and show the world how much we appreciate them.
