Goodman Theatre Names 2014-2015 Playwrights Unit Members
Stage Directions: The Goodman Theatre named Scott T. Barsotti, Mia Mccullough, Bonnie Metzgar and Carlos Murillo to their 2014-2015 Playwrights Unit. As members, the Chicago-based writers will meet twice per month with members of the Goodman’s artistic team to discuss their plays-in-progress and provide feedback for one another. The program culminates in summer 2015 with staged readings of their completed works at the Goodman.

I love whenever artists are brought together like this! It strengthens the community, and it strengthens the art. That said I disagree with the way the organizers chose to go about it. It would be much more beneficial and invigorating to have some less-established playwrights come together with these more secure choices. Yes, I understand the instinct to want to try and ensure that the end product will be as good as possible, but I think that taking that gamble will lead to much more dangerous work. If you make a situation that leads to more of the same, you're not going to get invigoration, even if you do get a modicum of control. Give up the control a little! Let some wild work happen. That isn't to say that this collaboration can't produce something exciting, but it's less likely than if you got some new blood in there. Also, why is it all white people? That's dumb.
