‘Motown The Musical’….and Motown The Icon

New Pittsburgh Courier: The opening line of Martha & the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street,” one of Motown’s most celebrated and enduring hits, put it succinctly: “Calling out around the world, are you ready for a brand new beat?” The world was ready for it then, and the world is ready for it now. “Motown the Musical” is a show that came along at the right time. It took Broadway by storm and is now being presented at the Fisher Theatre through Nov. 16.

Normally I find myself bored by musicals based on existing music with a couple of exceptions. Motown seems to be one of them. Instead of being a forced storyline with a couple of crowd-pleasing hits thrown in, Motown seems to be more of a musical celebration, preserving and honoring a revolutionary time in musical history. The music of Motown very likely changed the world for the better, which is something that people might not think about particularly often, but has a lasting impact on the music industry. I'm not sure how strong the book of the show might be, but the subject is definitely one worth celebrating.

I'm not entirely sure what Motown is. Is it a style or genre or music, or a recording company, or both? These musicals about music always confuse me a little, because I never understand where the plot comes from. I personally feel that the story is the most important part of a play. if the story isn't good, then there is no reason for anyone to continue to pay attention.

I remembered one of my friends went to see this during spring break last year and ended up crying. This history of Motown is always touching, inspiring, and heart breaking at the same time for people, and definitely for musician. It's a good guideline of what to do and what not to do, and how to make your music so distinct and stand out that it easily be considered and another music genre, we said Motown Music, we know what it means. I would definitely go to see this who considering how much I love the music , and I wonder how much they exaggerate / decorate the history to fit in the market taste.
