Pittsburgh Ballet starts 45th season with classic 'Sleeping Beauty'

TribLIVE: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will celebrate the opening of its 45th season with one of the jewels of its repertoire, a popular and iconic ballet it last presented five years ago.

“‘The Sleeping Beauty' is just one of those very special ballets, starting with the story but also because of the music,” artistic director Terrance Orr says. “Tchaikovsky's score is phenomenal. What it did to dance is to take music at that level and match it to the ability of the dancers. It's very important to me that we do it with a live orchestra.”

I really want to try to attend a performance by the Pittsburgh Ballet this year. Last year, myself and another student visited the ballet for a project and I just love the work they do. I find ballet fascinating, you get to see the human body like never before. I was the nutcracker in the Nutcracker at Vermont Ballet Theatre and that was such a cool experience to see ballet that up close in person. I think ballet is slowly dying, but so much could be done to bring it back to life. Modernizing ballet and changing the traditional set, costumes, and movements would bring a new life to the activity.

I think that it is awesome that the Pittsburg Ballet is doing the classic ballet of 'Sleeping Beauty' to open their 45th season. And there is certainly something to be said about the repetition of this performance with in only 5 years of its last. Terrance Orr credits the success of the ballet with the amazing music/orchestration but I believe it also is in part with an incredible story line as well as phenomenal dancers. The Pittsburgh Ballet couldn't have a better opening to this season.
