As a high school student, teachers would throw around the phrase "exceptional student", and it always made me uncomfortable. Contained within the word itself is "exception", which by its very dictionary definition calls upon an element of exclusion. I wanted to be a member of my class, or whatever group I was assigned to for a project. "Exceptional" implies comparison to those around the person in question, a kind of insurmountable difference. I really enjoy this piece's definition of a leader and how it identified the best leaders as those who act as parts of a whole. As someone who hopes to enter a managerial field, I hope to become an integrated leader, instead of an "exceptional" one.
