Autodesk to Call Its 3D Printer “Ember,” Premiering in Paris Next Week

MAKE: Autodesk, one of the world’s most prominent creative software companies, is launching its first piece of hardware this year. And now the printer has a name — Ember.

This is going to be really interesting if AutoDesk's program and open architecture work the way they make it sound. Currently, the problem with 3D printing is that is has an extremely high and difficult learning curve and takes a lot of trial and error. Autodesk claims that Ember and Spark will help alleviate this issue or learning curve. I wonder how simple it really will be. I wish I could see what they have in in mind now, but it makes more sense to watch for the finished product.

This is actually a pretty exciting product. The idea of vertical integration between a CAD program and a 3-d printer is extremely fascinating. The possibilities for simplification and lower learning curve between first party software and hardware are nearly endless. Hopefully the platform and integration will be much simpler than before when you had one company's CAD program printing to another companies 3d printer. The open source platform is also quite interesting because that means that other people can write cool scripts and other nifty addons the system as a whole
