Academy Award-winning computer graphics researchers add Katayanagi Prizes to their credits

www.networkworld.com: Stanford University’s Pat Hanrahan and Cornell University’s Doug L. James, a pair of computer graphics innovators, have been named recipients of this year's Katayanagi Prizes in Computer Science. The prizes are presented by Carnegie Mellon University and Tokyo University of Technology (TUT), and are endowed by Japanese entrepreneur and education advocate Koh Katayanagi, who founded TUT.

I always find it interesting when a breakthrough for one reason, say the need for improved computer graphics for movies, have great impacts on other, non related fields. It reminds me of how things discovered or invented for use on NASA space missions have become part of daily lives, like Dippin' Dots. It's things like these that show that the whole idea behind the BXA major has merit.
