A Ballerina Who Dances On The Points of Knives, Seriously
fashionablygeek.com: All too often, ballerinas don’t get enough credit for what they do. It takes incredible strength, precision, and grace to stand in pointe shoes – never mind moving and dancing in them. Amélie Ségarra, the performer starring in Javier Pérez’s “En Puntas”, takes it to a whole other level; she dances on knife points. Yeah, the ones pictured above. It’s mind blowing.

This was such a unique approach to ballet. This dancer is truly remarkable and has taken a huge risk in performing this piece. For most, going on pointe is difficult enough, but making the surface area significantly smaller and the distance from the ground greater makes this act looks nearly impossible. Amelie can interact with these knifes in such a fashion that is just astonishing. I personally can perform a demi pointe position, but this would be nearly unachievable without a ton of assistance.
I have a friend who dances pointe, and she has been doing it since middle school. I remember how bruised her feet were when she had first started practicing, and how messed up they are now because of it. I get the feeling that this is a trailer for a new french movie...the grunts seemed kind of over dramatic...either way this requires extreme balance and skill to keep on the tips of the knives. Would scraping into the piano surface be more difficult than just walking...I think she was tripping herself up everyvtime she did that...
This is freaking insane! As a dancer myself I have so much respect for her. Pointe is something that in general isn't easy. However, adding the idea of having to balance on knives that makes it crazy! I have no idea how she could do it. I also have a lot of respect for the person who engineered the knives to the shoes because that also had to be a pretty hard task. My one critique is that the part with the man in the audience at the begging was quite awkward, and didn't make sense. To end, I also want to point out that as fantastic as this is a good piano was damaged.
This is not the first time that I've seen this video. It was all over the internet a few weeks ago. If I remember correctly, it's an art piece that was completely produced by a French artist who was working with Ms. Seggara. The grace and strength required by the dancer to actually be able to pull this off is incredible. I was wondering throughout the whole opening how the dancer was going to be able to stand up in the shoes and manage to climb on top of the piano. The rope solved that problem, and managed to make the dancer look graceful, evening while struggling to stand up on the tip of the knives. As a musician though, the knives on the piano made me cringe. It was a beautiful piece, though.
This was horrifying. I had to pause to breathe a little half way through the video. I am not sure what exactly is so off-putting about it, but I think it is probably the expression on her face, and/or her screams. The performance is very impressive but it kind of reminds me of the movie jackass. She is putting herself through this clearly painful stunt for the most part just to show that she can. The video is clearly meant to be artistic but the focus is her struggle. I wish I knew the language I was curious what she way saying. On a separate note for a lot of the video I was just trying to figure out if they had covered the piano or not. The thought of her stabbing that poor innocent piano was almost as heart wrenching as her performance.
This is just perfection. I can't get over this. I've seen this all over the internet and every time I see it, it just boggles my mind. Growing up with ballet dancers as best friends, I've heard time and time again the torture the toes receive from point alone. Thinking about the paint this woman is going through is unfathomable. How she is doing this is beyond me. Advil maybe? Who knows. This is something I would pay money to see and even more money just to have a talk back of sorts with the dancer. It's such a great view on the human form and movement and the pain we endure. Love this beyond words.
So what about the piano, I mean come on the piano did not ask to have some one walk all over it with those knives. I personally would not like a person to walk on my back with knives. You know the piano was probably so excited, I can hear the piano now. "OO look at this beautiful theatre,UUUU LOOK this ballerina going to dance while someone plays me. WHY ARE YOU CLIMBING ON ME?? WHY ARE YOU PUTTING KNIFE SHOES ON!!!!"
Then a endless scream. Yet in the back of the paino's mind "Man she is talented has not even fallen once. She is amazing, I am going to have to tell my friends about her, if I do not die from all the knife wounds. Sounds like we are in the same amount of pain, if I could scream I would probably sound very similar to her."
I've seen this video a couple times now, and like Isaac I found really unsettling. The first time I saw it I was writhing in my seat and clenching my jaw. Part of it is the obvious pain and struggle of the ballerina; no need to be a dancer to get an idea of how difficult that was. But the video itself also played a huge part. The editing, with the quick, constant point of view changes, made me very uncomfortable and emphasized in a great way the tension of the moment. The sound too, very bare, was like a spotlight on the ballerina and the knives.
This video is so different from anything I've seen before, and I love its raw nature and overwhelming tension. A great idea, beautifully executed.
I was made really uncomfortable by this piece. Normally with ballet the idea is not to see the pain and effort behind the work, however in this piece, it is all there. I really appreciate the skill and the beauty that goes into dancing, but in this case I was also unnerved by the rest of the things that come with it. I think it is important to be aware of both.
This is the second time ive seen this video and its truely is still stunning to me. The whole idea behind adding knives to a tallent that already requires incredible amounts of skill is just mind blowing. It makes me wonder what a show that was performed entirely on point would be like, and then to throw an extra danger onto it is just fascinating. the amount of fear that it took this ballerina to do this is just unfathomable to me. at first i didn't even notice that she was on top of a piano which just adds an extra amount of danger to this performance. I do wonder though if she was actually struggling or if that part of the performance was exaggerated, i cant imagine they'd actually let her perform that unless everyone involved with this performance was 110% sure and confident in her.
This is a very powerful video and while i cant really see any reason a sane person should don large knifes for shoes, it ended up being very interesting to watch. It adds an element of danger and grit to what is normally a very light and flowey art form. It takes something we are used to and completely turns it around which happens to be exactly what we're talking about in Olivier's Nose right now.
