Where is the Industry Heading: An Interview with Cat West

iSquint | Entertainment Lighting News & Review: "In our continuing column, Where is the Industry Heading we sat down with Cat West. Cat toughs herself more of a console programmer rather then a designer but from time to time finds her herself designing lights in the fly. Cat has worked in the entertainment industry for over 10 years working as a wholehog specialist for High End Systems for 4 years."

I read this article and found it very interesting. I thought what she had to say about LEDs just being the hot new thing is true, and haring another opinion on the projectionist differential was interesting. However, what really struck me was how she does not call herself a LD, but a console programmer. I feel that a lot of people out there who really like the execution of someone else's ideas. Though this niche exists, here at cmu, and many other drama schools, there is no program for it. Often if you like lighting, but not the design portion, you get stuck in TD or LD. I don't think this is fair. If programs exist to teach people how to build sets instead of designing them, then there should be a program to teach people how to be a lighting technician, not just a designer.
