Alums Light Up Primetime & More

Entertainment News - Carnegie Mellon University: "As you set your DVR for the new fall shows, be sure you don't miss the ones that feature Carnegie Mellon's talented alums — on screen and behind the scenes.
'Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama is one of the world's leading educational institutions focused on preparing young artists for careers in the theater and entertainment industries,' said Peter Cooke, head of the school."

This article seems a little bland for the cover news on the homepage. It's not actually highting anything or anyone special. It feels more like a promotion of the School of Drama than an actual spotlight on our program. Either way, what is most impressive about this list is that there are couple names in primetime that practually just graduated. It says volumes about the type of people we produce and the type of training we give that our students are able to successfully find a career after college. Granted, most of it is the game of chance, but there is something impressive to see an '03 student on a hit show like madmen. Granted, that was six years ago but I feel whenever we spotlight out alumn they usually graduated in the 90s or older. Have the younger students spotlighted helps show we produce an agressive, successful professional who will be able to work and not wait for their big break. Most of the time. . .

I had that Carnegie Mellon School of Drama graduates were appearing or starring in roles on primetime shows like "24," "Heros," or "The Good Wife" or doing set design for "Accidentally on Purpose" or costume design for "Ugly Betty." It's great to see that our alumni are having successful careers both shortly after graduating and after years of working. Best of luck to all of them!

I think this kind of list would be more meaningful if it was more comprehensive. I know that the focus is on television, but Patrick Wilson, one of the biggest names, is just mentioned in the very last line of the article, since he is primarily in movies. Also, it's a shame that the focus is more on the actors than those behind the scenes, I know there has got to be more of an alumni presence than mentioned, and it couldn't hurt to list a few more. I agree however, that the most important thing is that it shows some people who could be considered "recent" graduates, because it shows relevant success stories.

I love looking over lists like this, because it presents the chance to see what the school of drama here at CMU has turned out. I agree that it would be nice to see more of those behind the scenes, but I think that the actors are more well known by name, and therefore have a stronger presence on a page like this. I do like seeing the more recent graduates as well, because it does show the progress, and it is inspiring to know that these alumni are doing so well, and where in our shoes not too long ago.

Drama seems to have an advantage over other schools and departments in producing lists like this since most of the Drama alumni who are notable in their careers are also well-known to the general public while other schools' alumni might be well-known inside their industries but less so in everyday life. Even so, it's still an impressive list. Seeing that many somewhat recent alumni in the public eye really makes this school even more impressive.
