New, Edgy 'Tosca' By Metropolitan Opera Draws Boos

NPR: "Most serious opera lovers know what they like and like what they know. Many saw something they didn't like or care to know last night at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, a new interpretation of Tosca, Giacomo Puccini's beloved warhorse.
The Met staged a production of the opera as re-imagined by Swiss director Luc Bondy who evidently left out some of the traditional features opera goers associate with Tosca while creating post-modern sets, all of which proved too much for many in the audience."

Not to self, don't screw with a classic at the Met. While this behavior might be a little bizarre at the majority of theaters across the country, I would assert that opera-folk have certain expectations they assume will be met, and if they are not, given the money they are paying to see this show, they have the right to outright object. And to be fair, there is something to be said to directing your show with your audience in mind. We came to that conclusion today in Salt Peanuts. Perhaps Bondy should have tried this adaptation on a more open minded audience, in a less high profile area.
