PRODUCER’S PERSPECTIVE: "I've got a soft spot in my heart for The New York Musical Theatre Festival. The NYMF was our midwife on Altar Boyz, and without her, it would have been an even tougher birth than it was."
Theater festivals like this are a great starting place for new inventive theater. Of the five shows most anticipated, Fat Camp, interests me the most. Unfotunatly I feel more people will be able to relate to the themes of the show, then that of Fantasy Football the musical.
This festival has started a lot of great new theater including Altar Boyz, N2n, and Title of Show. All shows that can vary in scale and focus on telling a story rahter then over powering you with bright lights and large flashy sets.
I would like to attend this festival and hopefully see a show that makes it to the big broadway stage. Not only to see how it grows and changes but to see history in the making. The creative that surrounds this festival and festivals like it must be intense.
Props to the author of this post. Unlike a lot of recent articles (sorry cmu blog), this one was so incredibly fun to read, and really well articulated and stimulating. It mastered that element of reaching out to the reader personally, and creating excitement. I must say, I was originally attracted to the title when I saw the words "Altar Boyz" because I love them so much, (btw, Cheyenne Jackson as Matthew? Really? I had no idea). But I kept reading because of the football musical. I am not sure who thought of this, but it's absolutely amazing. I'm envisioning someone saying to themselves, what is the complete opposite of a theatre person...a football player. Great, I'm writing a musical. The funny thing is, I usually juxtapose football and theatre whenever I am comparing two completely different things. The fact that someone is making a musical out of football just makes me giddy and happy that someone finally went there.
It's interesting to see the kinds of musicals that are being created for the festival, although I wish we could find out more of what the five musicals are actually about. Some of them sound kind of interesting, and I think that at a festival like this, anything could happen in a show. However, I don't really like the idea of Fantasy Football: The Musical. It sounds like a musical that is just trying to get sports fans to go to the theatre so that the producers can make money. It could be good, but that's just my first impression. I'm interested to see what that musical will actually be like.
