Phantom's Leading Ladies take Broadway highlights on tour

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "'The Phantom of the Opera' has given three Broadway singers more than just top billing in the lead female role.
'We are happy, busy, and it keeps us off the streets,' says Karen Culliver, one of a trio called the Phantom's Leading Ladies."

It's actually rather impressive to see a small cabaret reaching such a vast market, ranging from large concert halls to coffee shops, and to have such a run. However, what has stood out the most in the article has nothing to do with the show these women are working on, but what exactly does it mean when the white house commands a performance? In addition, what does that entail? I feel like it's something you cannot be trained for but should because when the white house calls you go, but what do you bring with you?
