Advocacy Group Opposes ‘Miracle Worker’ Casting Choice
NYTimes.com: "Two weeks after a group of deaf actors protested the choice of a hearing actor for a deaf role in an upcoming Off Broadway production, the issue has surfaced again: Should producers have chosen a deaf or blind child actress to play Helen Keller in this winter’s Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker”?"

After reading about how Brighton Beach closed essentially becuase its lack of stars I have to understand where the lead producer comes from with casting Abigal Breslin. Although I understand the Advocacy group's intentions it has to be understood that to succeed on a broadway stage there simply has to be a bigger grab for people- in this case it is Ms. Breslin. At least they tried working with blind and deaf actors to fit the part and are looking for an understudy. They could probably try alot harder though it seems.
I agree with Bryce. There seems to be a lot of concern and focus on celebrities and what they can bring to an opening show on broadway. I think that theatre should be appreciated based on the text as well as the acting and all of the design aspects. From three articles that I commented on this week, it sounds to me that broadway is turning into a new hollywood thing. I'm just annoyed with all of this because I have always wanted to design a broadway show and I want the shows to be appreciated by theatre goers not just tourists looking to see a star or not wanting to see anything that is depressing. These people did not look hard enough for a blind/deaf actor. This is an issue and it should be dealt with.
