Despite All the Corpses Milling Around, Things Are Quite Lively at This Mall
WSJ.com: "Hundreds of pale-faced zombie wannabes gather here to lurch and stumble through the mall that served as the setting for George Romero's 1978 horror classic 'Dawn of the Dead.' The zombies wear dazed looks and blood-splattered clothes as they limp past stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret. The hungry ones bellow for brains."

Wow this gave me a much needed laugh today. It's great to see the theatrical things people do when they have free time. Never once have i even considered shopping at the mall like a zombie. I guess for the mall any press is good press. It does go to show though, something as simple a a halloween dressup gained attention simply because of its theatrics. Just goes to show how great the power of theatrics could be if used for something actually meaningful.
I really love this, I've known about "zombie walks" for a while, but have never actualy seen one. The appeal to me is that it adds an element of interactivity to movies, by allowing ordinary people to take part in a tradition, in the actual setting of a movie. It also allows creativity, becaue as the article point out, ordinary people can be zombies. A zombie can look like anything, there is no one recognizable way to dress like one. A lot of clever makeup and costume choices can be made, and that's the exciting part to me.
Though definitely one of the stranger subcultures I'm interested in, I always love to hear about how media so greatly affects people's lives. One man's vision, and terrifying movie, created such a following that thousands (and many more who don't run around in malls) of people would dress up and act like the monsters he created. I think the band and the beauty pageant are quite funny, and makes the whole thing seem very enjoyable despite what mall workers might think.
