Dangerous Theater

The Rob Kozlowski Chicago Theater and Vintage Film Medicine Show: "There's nothing wrong with the American theater that better plays (and better programming) can't cure. I honestly believe this. So why the problem?"

This is the best article I have read on here. IT speaks mainly to directors, but to everyone. Do dangerous theater. Take theater and flip it on it's head. You are taking a risk, but it is a risk that will be rewarded. Not only are you doing something creative but you are making it your own.

Fuerza Bruta- the experiemntal show on off Broadway does just that. You don't sit down. You stand and move with the show. It is an experience and not a presentation. They took a risk and coming this Thanksgiving I will be brining along 5 new friends who haven't seen it because I feel like it is my duty as a theater goer to show people sides of theater they rarely seen. I know seeing Fuerza Bruta has influenced me and made me want to to just what Fuerza is. Dangerous experiemntal theater. I want to take risks and not do something like everyone else does.

Theater needs to head in this direction. IF not it will continue being a dying art that will forever be lost in boring unrisky theater we have today!

I completely agree here. There are so many places everywhere that produce the same shows as everyone else... After awhile it becomes a bit mundane.... When I come across something that I've never heard of before, it already sparks my interest just because it is new. I think every theatre should try to do 'dangerous theatre' once in awhile. Sure, there is a risk involved, but taking risks is the only way to advance.

I agree that theatre's need to create and perform more challenging and daring theatre. Then of course there is the problem of economic viability. A theatre company needs to balance art and money. it's no easy task but it's essential to the longevity of theatrical art.

Pushing the envelope is difficult and is really quite terrifying. However it is this kind of theatre that I love most of all. It takes a little nerve, a solid story and a creative team of actors and designers.

I feel that more people would do this if they wern't scared of the economic repercussions of it.
