Universal picks first British woman to run a Hollywood studio

guardian.co.uk: "Donna Langley, named this week as co-chair of Universal Pictures, has become the first British woman ever to run a Hollywood studio.
The last (and first) Brit to head a US major was David Puttnam, who was chairman of Columbia Pictures from 1986-87. Unlike Puttnam, however, Langley is a Hollywood insider who is barely known in her own country. Now 41, she comes from the Isle of Wight, but has worked in the US for her entire career."

I am happy society has reached yet another pivotal point where we are ready to put a British woman in charge of a movie studio. I think only time will tell us if she does a good job, but from looking at Universal's movies from the past year, I can only see an upward direction moving forward. I think it is understandable why there needed to be a change of management.

I don't understand why studios make these bad movies. Can;t they tell from focus groups that there will be little momentum for those titles? I think Universal learned this year that well known actors and cool effects don't sell movies, good plots do.
