Los Angeles Times: “Crazy Rich Asians” will soon come to Broadway, years after author Kevin Kwan’s bestseller jumped from page to screen in a watershed moment for Asian representation in Hollywood.

Persoanlly I completeley support the idea of a Crazy Rich Asains being a musical. Its such a colorful movie, I can see how design wise it would transfer really well. I will say though that this is one of these shows where a minimalistic design would really fall short, so I hope that whoever they choose to design is really prepared to go all out. The movie sort of reminds me of great batsby for the sheer amount of luxury and color in it. I would be really interesting to see what type of music they choose for the show and what scenes they turn into songs and how they go about doing/making those choices. I genuinely like the movie though and I am worried that the show maybe wouldnt hit as hard if it isnt done with the effort, money and time that it needs. Nevertheless thoug i would absolutely buy tickets to see that show when it happens.

Listen. I really dislike (and when I mean really dislike, I really mean HATE) when people turn movies into stage productions/musicals. It's absolutely pointless. There are so many people writing original works out there and they are being overshadowed by pieces that are already considered mainstream media. For example The Outsiders. As much as I loved both the book and the movie it just didn’t need to be a musical at all. Now, will I be watching it? At some point, yes. But, it still doesn’t change my mind that there should be full, RECENT, original works on Broadway right now. How to Dance In Ohio was such a perfect example of this. Sadly, it is shut down, and I was so happy to see it before their run ended. Anyways, all this being said. I really want to see how they take Crazy Rich Asians and create a staged musical from the original. And I hope they do it well because I absolutely loved the original film.

It is so interesting to me to see all of these movies being turned into musicals. A lot of times it makes me wonder if anyone will take a chance on a new idea or if they will always take the easy way out. Honestly, I am a little tired of seeing movies turned into musicals, sometimes I just want something new and fresh. Frankly, the music in these new musicals is not even that good. They just take a premise, repeat the same thing over again and have a million repeats of the chorus. I can understand when a book gets turned into a film because it becomes a visual representation of the written word, but does it need to be both a musical and a film? Is one or the other not enough? Do we really need to hear songs about things we have already heard expressed much more concisely in the spoken version? I guess I wonder why it is necessary, I know that this musical will probably be very popular but frankly I would much rather see an original new work than a most likely subpar musical rendition of “Crazy Rich Asians.”

This is honestly really great for Asians in the entertainment industry, as well as young Asian people who need role models to look up to. growing up as a half asian child I always felt dismayed when I never saw any Asian portrayals on the screen, unless it was a nerd or a tattletale or a weirdo. it's always made me feel insecure about being Asian. why aren't there any cool asians? is what I would ask my mother at only 10 years old. little did I know it was just a racist portrayal of Asians in the media which did this. Asians have always been overlooked and their challenges and struggles have been pushed aside, they're successful they must be happy. other races need the help more than Asians do is what I was told. this is extremely not true and hurtful for young people trying to maybe start a life in the entertainment industry. of course crazy Rich Asians is in the most accurate portrayal of Asian people, but at least it's different. Asians can be rich Asians can be funny or smart or dumb or popular and this is what needs to be normalized. it's always been one narrative, someone not fully assimilated to America, but the movie really does show no matter how assimilated you are you can still be Asian and be individualistic. I really do hope that people go see the show when it opens, although I don't know how it might come off on stage it still would be cool to see it. especially to see the Asians premiered on stage.
