Quentin Tarantino’s ‘swashbuckling’ play The Popinjay Cavalier set for West End premiere
Theatre | The Guardian: Since Quentin Tarantino announced last year that he had written his first play, it has remained as mysterious as the contents of Marsellus Wallace’s briefcase in Pulp Fiction. But on Wednesday it was announced that the play, which Tarantino will also direct in London, is to be a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise” set in 1830s Europe.

Let’s talk about Tarantino. He’s definitely a weird guy, and for many, that’s enough to turn them off of him and his work all together. I get that, but I also think that most great artists are deeply unlikeable. I like Tarantino’s movies, and I think his style has always lent itself to the stage, with a deep focus on dialogue, character, and short bursts of action after lengthy building of tension. As mentioned in his article, The Hateful Eight (my personal favorite of his movies) is very play-like in its one-room mystery setting. Tarantino, at one point, had actually planned to adapt parts of the movie for the stage, but, as with many of his projects, it never became realized. I think it’s interesting that his live theatrical debut as a writer will be what seems to be a play in the same vein as The Scarlet Pimpernell and I’m very interested to see what will come of the production. If I ever got the chance to see the show live, I would be one of the first in line to see how a director who revolutionized the silver screen uses the stage to tell stories.
