Portland Opera launches $5 million SOS

Oregon ArtsWatch: Portland Opera, the largest opera company in Oregon and a mainstay of downtown Portland’s cultural scene, has announced an emergency $5 million fund-raising drive. The drive, announced Tuesday morning, March 3, will cover 16 months and has been kick-started by a $1 million gift from the Oregon Community Foundation.

Opera may be old but people still clearly have an interest and love for the art form. I find it interesting that their campaign to raise money after covid is happening four to five years after the pandemic. Art can be challenging to keep alive as many people can become swept away in their day to day lives and forget about the people constantly creating new things. As performing arts we rely on the availability of people to view our work and without them we wouldn't exist. So when the arts begin to drift to the back of people's minds after a catastrophic event, financial trouble from different companies can begin to arise and will only get worse if someone doesn't step in. In Portland Opera's case I think they are raising money to ensure their future while also ensuring they can properly give back to the community in a collaborative manner.
