DOJ vs. Live Nation-Ticketmaster trial begins today: what you should know as the case heads to a jury
TicketNews: The long-awaited U.S. antitrust case targeting Live Nation Entertainment and Ticketmaster officially enters its most consequential phase this week, with jury selection beginning in Manhattan federal court. Opening statements are expected Tuesday, marking the first time a jury will hear—under oath, and in public—the government’s argument that the dominant force in concert promotion, major venues, and primary ticketing has maintained its grip through unlawful conduct that ultimately shows up in fans’ wallets through higher fees, fewer choices, and a worse buying experience.

This definitely marks something that I’d actually want jury duty for. I also think that it’s almost insane to qualify anyone as an “unbiased” juror, because Live Nation prices and hidden fees harm literally everyone who consumes from them. This lawsuit generally helps anyone who wants to buy tickets, and the only entities that it harms are Ticketmaster and Live Nation themselves. I think it’s crazy that LN and Ticketmaster deny the allegations, state that “this is just how live entertainment pricing is!” and then don’t suggest doing anything to actually help the pricing. They also state that live entertainment is a competitive market, and cite that Ticketmaster’s hold on it actually isn’t that big because its market share has decreased since 2010. (The market share in question is literally 80%. Monopoly who?) The bottom line is, the way these prices work is completely unreasonable, and the only reason something might be getting done about it is because it’s an illegal monopoly.
