I’m not sure I’m thrilled about this. I love Elvis, sure, but I don’t know why we’ve got yet another jukebox musical in the works. Do we really need that as an industry? Do artists need to recycle existing art to get funding? The article relates this to the film, ELVIS. The film worked because it used his songs as a soundtrack- to convey mood, setting, etc. It did not use his songs as a plot-driving device. I’m hoping the theatremakers who are on this project agree with that take. Regardless of all that, I do enjoy how nonchalantly the film director announced a musical, one which he won’t even be directing himself. I’m glad to hear of his perspective of passing on the torch, so to speak, to other directors for different projects. I wonder what the timeline looks like on this, and at what scale it will be put on.
